Infrared

False color · IR film

Infrared film records light just past red, which our eyes can't see. Leaves glow, skies go dark and colors come out wrong in a beautiful way. Infrared gives your picture that false-color look, in color, black and white or purple.

What it's like

Load a roll of infrared film, put a filter on the lens and shoot a park at noon. The trees come back white or hot pink, the sky turns almost black, and skin gets a soft, waxy glow. It looks like summer on another planet. Infrared fakes that from an ordinary picture.

When to reach for it

  • Landscapes and trees, where the foliage turns pink or white.
  • Dreamy, unreal portraits with a soft halo.
  • Album and poster art that should feel strange but still photographic.

How it works

Healthy leaves bounce back a lot of infrared, so on this film they shine. Infrared reads how green and leafy each part of your picture is, plus its brightness and red, and treats that as the infrared signal. Color infrared film then shifts every layer down one, so infrared shows as red, red shows as green and green shows as blue. That shift is where the pink trees come from.
