# Grade

Temp · split tone

Color grading is the last pass on a film, where a colorist sets the mood shot by shot. Grade puts that suite's tools on your picture, from white balance and color wheels to one hue at a time and a handful of film prints.

## Controls

### Balance

- **Temperature** (Fader, -100 to +100, rests at 0). Cooler toward blue, warmer toward amber, like white balance on the camera.
- **Tint** (Fader, -100 to +100, rests at 0). Pushes the picture toward green or toward magenta.

### Tone

- **Exposure** (Fader, -100 to +100, rests at 0). Opens or stops down the whole picture, up to a stop and a half each way.
- **Contrast** (Fader, -100 to +100, rests at 0). Flat to punchy. The picture stretches away from the **Pivot**.
- **Pivot** (Knob, 0 to 100, rests at 50). The brightness that contrast turns around. Low keeps the shadows put, high keeps the brights put.
- **Highlights** (Fader, -100 to +100, rests at 0). Pulls bright areas back to recover detail, or pushes them brighter.
- **Shadows** (Fader, -100 to +100, rests at 0). Crushes the dark areas down or opens them up.
- **Black lift** (Knob, 0 to 100, rests at 0). Raises the blacks toward grey, for a faded, matte print.
- **Rolloff** (Knob, 0 to 100, rests at 0). Gives the highlights a soft shoulder, so whites ease off instead of clipping.

### Color

- **Saturation** (Fader, -100 to +100, rests at 0). Drains color toward grey or makes everything more vivid.
- **Vibrance** (Fader, -100 to +100, rests at 0). Like saturation, but it works hardest on muted colors and leaves vivid ones alone.

### Wheels

- **Shadow hue** (Hue fader, 0° to 360°, rests at 198°). The color the shadows lean toward.
- **Shadow tint** (Knob, 0 to 100, rests at 0). How strongly the shadows take that color.
- **Mid hue** (Hue fader, 0° to 360°, rests at 108°). The color the midtones lean toward.
- **Mid tint** (Knob, 0 to 100, rests at 0). How strongly the midtones take that color.
- **Highlight hue** (Hue fader, 0° to 360°, rests at 36°). The color the highlights lean toward.
- **Highlight tint** (Knob, 0 to 100, rests at 0). How strongly the highlights take that color.
- **Balance** (Fader, -100 to +100, rests at 0). Slides the line between shadows and highlights, so one tint reaches further into the picture than the other.

### Selective

- **Target** (Hue fader, 0° to 360°, rests at 29°). The hue you want to change on its own.
- **Range** (Knob, 0 to 100, rests at 30). How wide a slice of the wheel around **Target** gets moved. Greys are never touched.
- **Hue shift** (Fader, -120° to 120°, rests at 0°). Turns the target hue around the wheel, up to a third of the way.
- **Target sat** (Fader, -100 to +100, rests at 0). Mutes the target hue or makes it more vivid.
- **Target light** (Fader, -100 to +100, rests at 0). Darkens or lightens just the target hue.

### Film

- **Curve** (Select: Linear / Film S / Soft S / Crush / Faded / Log). The tone curve. **Film S** is punchy, **Soft S** gentler, **Crush** sinks the blacks, **Faded** lifts the blacks and dims the whites, **Log** goes flat.
- **Print** (Select: None / Warm print / Cool print / Teal & orange / Sepia / Cyanotype / B&W). A print look over the grade. Warm, cool, teal and orange, sepia, cyanotype blue or black and white.
- **Print amount** (Knob, 0 to 100, rests at 70). How much of the print look goes on.
- **Bleach** (Knob, 0 to 100, rests at 0). Skips the bleach, so silver stays in. Color drains and contrast climbs.
- **Crossover** (Fader, -100 to +100, rests at 0). Cross-processed color. Toward **Red**, the reds snap and the blues flatten. Toward **Blue**, the other way round.

### Finish

- **Vignette** (Knob, 0 to 100, rests at 0). Darkens the edges of the frame.
- **Vignette size** (Knob, 0 to 100, rests at 50). How far the vignette reaches in. Low closes it down around the middle.

### Motion

- **Breathe** (Knob, 0 to 100, rests at 0). Exposure swells and falls with the loop.
- **Rate** (Select: 1× / 2× / 4×). How many breaths a loop. One, two or four.
- **Flicker** (Knob, 0 to 100, rests at 0). Exposure flickers at random, like an old projector lamp.
- **Hue drift** (Knob, Off to 3 turns per loop, rests at Off). Every hue turns around the wheel, one to three whole turns a loop, so it never jumps.

### Buttons

- **Flash** (Pulse button). Press it and the picture blows bright, then settles.
- **Drain** (Pulse button). Press it and the color drains out, then comes back.
- **Hue kick** (Pulse button). Press it and every hue swings round the wheel, then swings back.

### Output

- **Mix** (hero knob, 0% to 100%, rests at 100%). The hero. How much of the grade you see over the original.
- **View** (Select: Result / Split / Before). **Result** shows the grade. **Split** puts the original on the left half. **Before** shows the original alone.

## Presets

- **Teal & Orange**: Warm skin and lights, everything else pushed to teal.
- **Bleach Bypass**: Silver left in: color drains, contrast climbs.
- **Faded Film**: Lifted blacks, soft whites, a warm cast.
- **Crushed Noir**: Black and white with crushed shadows.
- **Sepia Print**: An old warm print.
- **Cyanotype**: Prussian blue sun print.
- **Cross Process**: Slide film in negative chemistry: acid greens and hard reds.
- **Golden Hour**: Warm highlights, cool shadows, a soft shoulder.
- **Night Teal**: Cool moonlight with teal shadows and a vignette.
- **Green to Teal**: Only the greens move toward teal.
- **Pastel Lift**: Soft, lifted and light.
- **Color Cycle**: Every hue turns once around the wheel each loop.
